‘I am the resurrection and the life.
Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live...

A Conversation from our Sunday 8am community...
1) Don’t avoid grief, but do things to mark the grieving, otherwise your bottled up grief may be more difficult later on...
2) Grieving well allows for the whole person to be remembered, not just the situation when the person died...
3) counselling may be helpful and grief counsellors have strategies to help you understand what is going on...
4) the ‘stages of grief’ don’t actually come in a particular order - there are many characteristics to grieving and they can come whenever and in whatever order - we know this from experience...
5) Jesus said, "Remember me" before he died. Remembering is part of being able to move forward, integrating our experiences and making sense of the part our past plays in our futures.
6) Funerals replace weddings when you get old - try not to miss your own! [from our oldest member!]

SHEPHERD, Helen Margaret (née Davidson)
Died peacefully 3rd February 2023 in Greenwich Hospital. She was 98 years old, but her doctor was adamant that she did not look it until her final decline from last November. Her hearing remained strong and she was a regular participant in "zoom church".
Helen was a very active member of Eastwood Uniting Church. She and Lindsay had been married in the congregation and were huge contributors to church life before his death. They lived in Central St, Eastwood, and more recently, Helen was in Alan Walker Village, where she lived for over 20 years and provided a Sydney-base for her beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
The eulogy penned by her sister, Dorothy, is available to read in PDF - here.
Her private funeral service was held at Northern Suburbs on Tuesday 7th February 2023.

Christopher Owens
17 January 1945 - 11 September 2022
Some of you have heard that Chris was not long to live, some of his passing on, for others this will be a bit of a shock. It did happen very quickly at the end and he did not suffer thanks to the Sydney Home Nursing and Palliative Care team, the support of my family especially Corinne over the last 3 weeks and that of staff at RNSH for the 6 weeks prior. There in week 4 we all expected him to bounce back if not to where he was before and we still had some hope when he came home. We have been blessed that many of our Sydney friends have been able to call - some to joke with him, others to speak to him, pray and sing, each in their own way. For some, he was alert, for others he opened an eye, for others a small sign of hearing, Janet came three times from Dubbo. Corinne here constantly and her family (they live down the street). Janet's family came and in the last week his brother John stayed until after his passing on. Chris opened his eyes and recognised him in the earlier days of his visit.
Thanks to the many who have sent me or the girls emails and text messages or rung or come. We really appreciate your thoughts, prayers, hugs, time and many other kindnesses.
We will be saying a final farewell from earth of his body and giving thanks and celebrating his life on Monday. We hope to provide for those far afield to join as you may wish.
We may also use the 22nd public holiday to scatter his ashes at a significant rock spot on a path in the bush he often took at Bullaburra in his loved Blue Mountains. Let me know if you want more information. He will be joining many recently lost friends, Penny Robin K, Laurel S., Nancy P, Winsome G. with whose families we sympathise.
Rather than flowers, we would prefer if you supported Chris’ memory by giving to a charity of your choice or one of:
African Enterprise https://africanenterprise.com.au/donate-to-missions/
Bo Hospital, Sierra Leone https://www.bochildrenshospital.org.au/donation.php
Interserve, Food Relief in a conflict zone https://love.interserve.org.au/campaigns/emergencyfood/
Amnesty International
Resting in the hands of God, and praying you are too,
Kay

[Laurence] Basil Clucas
May 1919 - 27 May 2022
Some members of Eastwood UC will remember Laurence Basil Clucas, known as Basil. Just three weeks short of his 103rd birthday, Basil passed away peacefully on Friday 27th May 2022 in Shalom, Marsfield, where he had been a resident for the past three years (and very well cared for).
Basil and Marge built a home in Eastwood in 1949, bringing their two small daughters, and soon afterwards, the first of their two sons was born. Rosalie, Barbara, John and Paul each joined their parents into the life of Eastwood Methodist Church. When the church at Denistone East was built, closer to their home, Basil became one of the founding trustees and Marge taught Sunday School. In 1958 they moved into the home in Cocos Avenue which was sold only last year. They rejoined Eastwood Methodist Church, where Rosalie, Barbara and John married friends they’d met throught the MYF (Paul had moved to Melbourne). They also taught Sunday School, together with Marge. Rosalie and Barbara and their husbands were Foundation Members of the Musical Society.
Tennis kept him fit for most of his life, enjoying Saturday afternoons with several members of the Eastwood Congregation. He joined other men in driving shut-ins from Weemala on monthly Saturday morning outings and was a foundation board member of the Eastwood Christian Community Aid.
He and Marge often welcomed children from Dalmar Children’s Home to their family home for school holidays. Their hospitality was renowned. On many Sunday evenings the young people would gather after Church, and this was often at the Clucas home.
Following the death of Marge in 1983, Basil married long time family friend, Audrey Franklin, nee Best. Sadly, Audrey died after only two years of marriage. A long time companion has been Judy Small.
Although Basil has been unable to attend Worship at Eastwood for some time, he was always very interested in this Congregation.

Marking the End of Life
At Eastwood Uniting Church we hold the Christian conviction that while death is the end of mortal life,
it marks a new beginning in our relationship with God.
We are also here to share the sorrow of those who mourn, and to offer them our love and support.
The Christian recognition of death is a part of the Church’s offering of the whole of life to God. The Funeral Service is a time:
Normally, the Minister will meet with the Next of Kin to discuss Service arrangements, including inclusion of Eulogies/Tributes, Prayers, Hymns and Readings/Poems. Photographs are welcome. Funerals normally take a few days to arrange, but may take place some weeks after death, particularly where it is difficult to gather people together.
Eastwood Uniting Church offers several pastoral services:
